Transport Ministry Wants 5% Lower Songkran Death Toll

BANGKOK, April 3 (TNA) -- Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith said government agencies under his ministry would join forces to reduce the number of traffic accidents and deaths during the upcoming Songkran festival by 5%. The efforts were set for April 11-17 when transport would not be delayed and traffic would keep moving, he said. The overall number of traffic accidents and deaths must drop by 5%, the figures would have to fall by 10% at danger-prone road sections, and no one would be killed on public transport vehicles, expressways and level crossings, Mr Arkhom said. Drivers of public transport vehicles including boats and trains must have enough rest and refrain from narcotics and alcoholic drinks, he said. The transport minister also said that bus and train trips and flights would increase during the period to serve rising traveling demand. (TNA)
