Turkish industry minister says consumer rights to be improved thanks to revisions in law

ANKARA (A.A) - 15.03.2011 - The Turkish industry minister said on Tuesday that revisions to be made to Turkey's Consumer Law in the upcoming period would improve the level of consumer rights in the country.
Speaking at an award ceremony organized by the Turkish Standards Institution in capital Ankara, Turkish Industry & Trade Minister Nihat Ergun said remarkable legal arrangements had been carried out on areas such as consumer protection, product safety, insurance and banking in the last 8 years.
Ergun said several actions had also been taken in an effort to ensure the smooth, fast and qualified functioning of consumer courts in the recent term.
Ergun noted that his ministry had been improving its market audits in order to prevent manufacturing of harmful and life-threatening products.
"Today, we have a much more developed legal infrastructure than numerous European countries when it comes to protection of consumer rights. Thanks to the revisions to be made to the Consumer Law in the upcoming period, the level of consumer rights in our country will be strengthened more," he said.
The minister noted that awareness among consumers should be improved as well, adding that citizens had responsibilities as much as public institutions in order to prevent violation of consumer rights.
"Whatever rights you give to consumers, no results could be obtained unless citizens display efforts to seek their own rights," Ergun also said.
