Turkish industry minister warns automotive sector

ISTANBUL (A.A) - 14.04.2011 - Turkish Industry & Trade Minister Nihat Ergun said on Thursday that automotive sector was face to face with the risk of losing its speciality of being an exporter.
"Automotive sector, which made five million USD surplus in 2008 and 3.5 million USD surplus in 2009, turns into a sector which made 373 million USD foreign trade surplus in 2010. Isn't it a risk and threat? We can not ignore this risk," Ergun said while addressing a meeting where the new automotive strategy has been made public.
Ergun said a dynamic, reformist and competitive private sector should be formed to boost Turkey's economic power, adding that investments in the country should be increased through private sector.
Ergun referred to importance of confidence and stability environment in economy and politics for development of private sector, "since we have come to power in 2002, we organized economy policies in line with the needs of private sector, did not make concession from fiscal discipline, implemented banking reforms and thanks to all those an important resistance could be shown to ongoing global crisis," he said.
Minister Ergun said, "at the beginning of this year, we have made public Turkey's 'Industry Strategy Document' including action plans covering the years 2011-1014. We also prepared sectoral strategy documents for some sectors in parallel to Industry Strategy Document."
Ergun said 91,000 automobiles were sold in Turkey in 2002 whereas 510 thousand automobiles were sold in 2010, "we believe this figure will amount to one million in five years. We have this potential."
He said, "Turkey manufactures cars with zero error. There has been no car manufactured in Turkey and recalled."
Ergun said many global companies preferred Turkey as base for their regional operations noting this was not a coincidence.
He said Turkish automotive sector should keep its position as exporter.
Turkey made public on Thursday a 27-article action plan regarding the general purpose and targets of the automotive industry.
The vision of the action plan and strategy is to make Turkey a production center in its region and a R&D base.
The general purpose of the strategy, covering the years between 2011 and 2014, is to raise global competitive power of the automotive industry.
The strategy also aims to rehabilitate R&D studies, increase design, production and trademark capacities of companies, develop domestic and foreign markets, rehabilitate legal and administrative regulations, improve physical infrastructure.
