Chief UEFA inspector meets Turkish prosecutors over match-fixing investigation
ISTANBUL (A.A) - August 22, 2011 - UEFA's chief legal counsel for integrity and regulatory affairs, Pierre Cornu, met with Turkish prosecutors who are carrying out an investigation into match-fixing allegations that rocked Turkish football.
Accompanied by Turkish Football Federation (TFF) President Mehmet Ali Aydinlar, Cornu had a meeting with Istanbul chief public prosecutor Fikret Secen and prosecutor Mehmet Berk in Istanbul on Monday.
Following the meeting, TFF President Aydinlar said UEFA, the governing body of European football, would not prepare a report on match-fixing investigation in Turkey.
"He [Pierre Cornu] was here just to get information," Aydinlar told reporters after the one-hour meeting.
"Mr. Cornu thanked prosecutors for the probe and asked information about criminal prosecution," he added.
Scores, including players and club officials, have been arrested as part of the match-fixing scandal that rocked Turkish football.
Aziz Yildirim, the chairman of last season's league champions Fenerbahce, and cup winners Besiktas coach Tayfur Havutcu are among those who were jailed pending trial. Turkish Football Federation delayed start of the league until Sept. 9 because of the probe.
Last week, Turkish Football Federation was expected to make a decision on the fate of clubs that were allegedly involved in match-fixing charges, however, President Aydinlar said the federation would wait for prosecutor's indictment.
