Detentions continue in Turkish match-fixing investigation

ISTANBUL/ANKARA (A.A) - July 11, 2011 - The chairman of a leading Turkish football club and several other officials from the Turkish football world were detained Monday as part of an ongoing match-fixing investigation.
Turkish sports club Trabzonspor's chairman Sadri Sener and Turkish Football Federation's former executive Mehmet Levent Kizil were detained in Istanbul, while former Ankaragucu official Mumtaz Karakaya was taken into custody in capital Ankara, sources said.
On July 3, Turkish police waged operations in several Turkish provinces and searched premises of several football clubs, detaining scores in connection with match-fixing charges. Suspects included Aziz Yildirim, chairman of last season's Spor Toto Super League champions Fenerbahce, as well as a number of club officials, players and executives from several Turkish teams.
After a week-long interrogation, Aziz Yildirim was arrested and sent to prison on Sunday.
