Ministry Holds P. Ramlee Festival to Remember Film Icon
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 4 (Bernama) -- The Information, Communications and Culture Ministry is organising a festival to commemorate national icon P. Ramlee.
Academy of Arts, Culture & Heritage (Aswara) Rector Prof Dr Hatta Azad Khan said starting this month, several activities will be carried out by various ministry departments and agencies, such as the P. Ramlee Star contest organised by state-owned public broadcaster RTM on Monday and participated by contestants from Singapore, Indonesia and Brunei.
Hatta said RTM will hold the contest annually.
P. Ramlee (1929–1973) was a well known Malaysian film actor, director, singer, songwriter, composer and producer.
He is considered the icon of Malay entertainment in Malaysia, Singapore and Sumatra for his contributions in the movie and music industry and his literary work.
The P. Ramlee festival, called From Time to Time, is part of Information, Communications and Culture Minister Dr Rais Yatim's aspirations that activities such as theatre and song composition contests and such be organised to elevate the late icon's achievements.
Hatta said to achieve this, the Arts Academy, National Film Development Corporation Malaysia and RTM will launch a P. Ramlee Inspiration Short Film competition on Jan 1 and is open to all amateurs aged between 18 and 40.
The films ranging from between five to seven minutes will use P. Ramlee film titles, and one character and a line from the character in his films.
Films which pass the initial screening will be shown on YouTube and RTM for a month starting March 2, 2013 in conjunction with P. Ramlee's birthday to allow viewers to select the best film.
The Arts Academy will also organise a P. Ramlee Prime Talk programme featuring three talks in a year by researchers in the field of arts, music, theatres and films from February next year.
It will also launch a P. Ramlee Post-Graduate Studies programme and the Zamallah Award with 2013-2014 academic session to begin in June 2013.
"All activities are organised by the Information Ministry to show appreciation for contributions made by P. Ramlee, who has made a name not only locally but also internationally as an actor, director, singer and composer," Hatta said.
