hange In Mindset Vital To Reaching Zero Rubbish Target - Mayor
KOTA KINABALU (Sabah, Malaysia), Sept 26 (Bernama) -– Kota Kinabalu City Hall Mayor Abidin Madingkir said the zero rubbish target could only be achieved if the general public changed their mindset about cleanliness.
He said if the public could stop throwing rubbish indiscriminately, he was sure the Kota Kinabalu City (the capital of the East Malaysian state of Sabah) would be able to achieve a litter-free status in future.
"(Otherwise) A target is only a target," Abidin said at a ceremony to ratify Horizon Hotel as a litter-free premise here on Friday.
According to Abidin despite introducing various awareness programmes in the past, there were still people littering as evidenced by the number of compounds issued by the City Hall.
Meanwhile, the mayor said the City Hall had taken steps to carry out separation of food waste from eateries and food premises.
He said even though the Solid Waste Management Act had not been enforced in Sabah and Sarawak, he urged all food premises, hotels and residential areas to conduct their own food waste and disposal separation.
Hotel Horizon first achieved a litter-free zone status in 2012 and is an active participant of City Hall’s programmes, including its anti-plastic bag campaign and 5K initiatives (cleanliness, beauty, safety, peace and harmony).
A total of 110 zones have been declared litter-free in Sabah since 2008.
