European Commission launches probe on code-share deal between Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa
BRUSSELS (A.A) - 14.02.2011 - European Commission on Monday said it had launched a probe over a code-share deal between Turkey's flag carrier airlines company, the Turkish Airlines, and Lufthansa to find out if the deal violated European Union's competition laws.
The commission said it would scrutinize whether the code-share deal --signed January last year-- was against competition rules on flights on Munich-Istanbul and Frankfurt-Istanbul destinations and risked higher prices and lower service quality.
The commission also said it had launched a separate probe against a similar deal between Brussels Airlines and TAP Portugal as to whether the deal hampered competition laws on flights between Brussels and Lisbon.
The launching of the probe does not imply that the commission has proof of infringements. The commission might charge fines for up to ten percent of a company's total sales if it finds out any breach of the competition laws.
