11th death from rabies in Kalasin

BANGKOK, June 18 (TNA) – A man died of rabies in the northeastern province of Kalasin, prompting officials to vaccinate dogs and cats against rabies. The acting Director-General of the Department of Livestock Development, Sorawit Thaneeto said he ordered outbreak investigation and rabies vaccination in the province in the wake of the new case of human death this year. According to provincial livestock officials, the man was bitten by a dog in Yang Talat district in Oct last year and did not get a vaccine against rabies after the incident. The dog has never been vaccinated and its owner killed the dog and burned the carcass without informing local authorities to collect samples of the dog carcass for a lab test. Health officials were reported about a suspected rabies exposure case on June 14, they have urgently vaccinated dogs and cats in the village. Earlier, local authorities had vaccinated 764 dogs and cats or about 72 per cent of the animals in the area from May 28-June 4. The vaccination for dogs and cats in the Yang Talat district will be completed in one week. (TNA)
