CANAKKALE (A.A) – August 16, 2011 – Archaeologists unearthed a 1,800-year-old house in Apollo Smintheus Temple in the northwestern province of Canakkale.
During the excavations conducted in the ancient temple in Gulpinar hamlet of Ayvacik town in Canakkale, archaeologists unearthed a house used by a doctor as well as some medical equipments.
Assistant Prof. Davut Kaplan told A.A on Tuesday that they found the house by coincidence, and reached the foundation of the building as well as unearthed some medical equipments which were made of bronze and bones.
Kaplan said that the building and the equipments were nearly 1,800 years old, adding that the data showed that the house belonged to a doctor who lived during Roman period.
Temple of Apollo Smintheus was firstly discovered by the traveler Jean Baptista Le Chevalier in 1785. One of the most important aspects of Apollo Smintheus (The Lord of the mice) is that it has sculptures depicting mythological events which were told in Homeros' famous book of Iliada.
