AEPW set up in Thailand

BANGKOK, January 22 (TNA) - The Alliance to End Plastic Waste (AEPW) has been set up in Thailand, targeted to mobilize about 1.5 billion US dollars, or about 46.5 billion baht, over the next five years to look for and develop appropriate solutions to the management of plastic wastes in the country, covering those in the sea. Jim Fitterling, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Dow Chemical (Thailand) Co., Ltd., a leading science business conglomerate, told journalists on Tuesday that Dow and other 30 leading private firms, government agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and consumer protection bodies, have agreed to jointly set up the AEPW to have first mobilized about 1 billion US dollars, or about 31 billion baht, to concretely look for and develop the solutions to the management of plastic wastes and to promote options for handling the used plastic garbage. "The AEPW, which comprises of allied partners functioning in all corners across the world, including the North America, the Latin America, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East, has been set up with a hope for helping reduce and manage plastic wastes more efficiently towards a circular economy as expected", the Dow CEO explained. According to the Dow CEO, investment plans and the development of solutions to the management of plastic wastes by the AEPW will be conducted in four areas, including basic infrastructure in the management of plastic wastes to promote and support more recycling of the wastes, new innovative technologies that are practical for the management and the recycling of plastic wastes to become new value-added products, integrated moves by all stakeholders for concrete actions towards the solutions and the protection of the environment from plastic wastes.
