Al-Sharq: Qatar is Active Partner in International Community to Combat Climate Change Phenomenon

Doha, July 25 (QNA) - Qatari daily Al-Sharq affirmed in its editorial on Sunday that the State of Qatar, at an early stage, has assumed its responsibility as an active partner in the international community to combat the phenomenon of climate change which threatens all developed and developing countries alike. The paper called on the international community to redouble joint efforts to confront the phenomenon of climate change and reduce its repercussions before it is too late, pointing out that the unprecedented natural disasters, such as high temperatures, storms, heavy rain, floods and landslides, left hundreds of victims in many country, isolated hundreds of areas and displaced hundreds of thousands of residents who lost loved ones, shelter and property. The newspaper said that the world has already begun to face the terrifying and catastrophic impacts of climate change, as severe weather waves have swept many regions around the world in recent weeks, and perhaps the disasters they left behind reiterate once again the extremely dangerous repercussions of this phenomenon on all forms of life, including human life. The State of Qatar hosted the 18th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 2012, and the Doha Carbon and Energy Forum, and has spared no effort to ensure the success of negotiations of the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015, the paper noted. At the national level, Qatar has taken many measures to develop technologies taking into consideration climate change and adoption of clean energy, which are a key aspect of its National Vision 2030, the paper added. Al-Sharq concluded its editorial by saying that the State of Qatar, out of its keenness on joint cooperation to confront this serious phenomenon and its forward-looking vision, has announced a donation of $100 million to support small developing island states and the least developed states to help them deal with climate change, and it is also working through the Sovereign Wealth Fund, a founding member of the One Planet Sovereign Wealth Funds Framework, to accelerate efforts to address climate change issues and help achieve the climate goals of the Paris Agreement.
