Al-Watan: Qatar Attaches Great Importance to Promote, Protect Human Rights

Doha, August 30 (QNA) - Al-Watan newspaper affirmed in its Monday editorial Qatar's firm belief that promoting and protecting human rights is a strategic choice and a fundamental factor in economic, social, cultural and environmental transformation of the country, referring to Qatar National Vision 2030 and its important axes on the main issues of human rights in the fields of education, health, environment, labor rights, community solidarity and children's rights. Qatar adopted many legislative measures related to promoting and protecting human rights since the promulgation of Law No. 12 of 2015, which granted the National Human Rights Committee independence, immunity and legal guarantees, which enables the Committee to perform its work and tasks freely and transparently, in addition of its membership in the Human Rights Council, the newspaper pointed out. Al-Watan said that the State has an active role in strengthening the tasks of the National Human Rights Committee, which provides for achieving universal respect for all values and principles of human rights and fundamental freedoms without discrimination, as well as effectively addressing human rights violations committed in all parts of the world. The State values the contributions of expatriate workers and their role in the development and renaissance project of the State, the newspaper added. In preparation for hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup and other major sporting events, the State of Qatar adopted serious legislative measures to guarantee basic principles and rights at work for all workers, including those who participate in sports infrastructure, highlighted Al-Watan, which gained wide international recognition, especially from the International Labor Organization and the International Trade Union Confederation. Al-Watan concluded its editorial by saying that sport and human rights reinforce each other, and as sport is a global language, it has a great ability to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms for all, especially among young people, by contributing to the promotion of several principles such as solidarity, equality and tolerance on all levels.
