Asmc Predicts Wetter Condition In Asean Maritime Continent With Ongoing La Nina
JAKARTA, Nov 1 (Bernama) -- Some parts of the eastern maritime continent may face wetter conditions this week amid the La Niña weather pattern, according to ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC).
The centre said drier conditions are likely over much of central and eastern mainland, with cooler conditions to swoop into central and southeastern mainland.
“For the regional assessment of extremes, there is a small increase in chance to occur in Peninsular Malaysia,” it said in its weekly disaster update.
ASMC also predicts a moderate chance in Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara, and Maluku Islands for a very heavy rainfall event and a moderate increase in chance for extreme hot conditions to occur in the Philippines.
For the past week, 43 disasters comprising two earthquakes, 28 floods, eight landslides, one storm, and four wind-related, affected the region, especially Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported floods, landslides, and wind-related events caused by moderate to heavy rainfall, high tide, strong wind, unstable soil condition, and overflowing of the rivers and irrigation channel.
The affected areas are namely Aceh, Bali, Banten, Bengkulu, West Java, Central Java, East Java, South Kalimantan, Lampung, East Nusa Tenggara, West Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, and North Sulawesi.
Malaysia’s National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) reported that flooding occurred in states of Kedah and Melaka.
The Philippines’ National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported flooding, landslides, storms, and winds caused by Tropical Cyclone Nalgae and magnitude 6.4 earthquake in Abra.
