Azerbaizhan Mambetov died
Almaty, November 19, 2009 (Khabar) - The people’s artist of the USSR, laureate of the state prize of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic, “Khalyk Kakharmany” title holder, “Otan” decoration holder and famous theatre and film director Azerbaizhan Mambetov has died aged 78. His friends and family have received a telegram with condolences from the head of state Nursultan Nazarbayev. Azerbaizhan Mambetov was born on the 1st of September in the Volgograd region. During the war, his family moved to Almaty. In 1952, he graduated from the Alma-Ata Theatrical Art School and later from the directors’ department of the Russian Academy of Theatrical Arts and came to work at the Auezov Kazakh Drama Theatre. He became the theatre’s main director and head when he was 32 years old.
After the staging of “A wolf cub under a hat” by the then-unknown playwright Kaltai Mukhamedzhanov, Mukhtar Auezov praised the play himself and wished both its author and director a good journey to success in their creative activity. However, Mambetov won true recognition after staging the “Mother’s field” based on Chinghiz Aitmatov’s work. He received his first state prize for it which took place almost 40 years ago. Amina Umurzakova, Bibigul Tulegenova, and Farida Sharipova received similar awards at the time.
Azerbaizhan Mambetov, national hero title holder:
- When asked if I am happy, I reply, I’m happy during some short moments but not always. Every artist will say that it’s impossible to be happy all the time.
Mambetov shot such feature films as “Wings of a Song”, “Heralds in a Hurry”, and “Blood and Sweat”. He staged “Uncle Vanya” by Chekhov on the theatrical stage. In the course of the last ten years, Azerbaizhan Mambetov worked as an art director at the Kalibek Kuanyshbayev Kazakh State Musical Drama Theater.
