Baby hyrax born at Chiang Mai Zoo

CHIANG MAI, March 25 (TNA) - A baby hyrax, the sixth of its kind and probably a solitary family at zoos in Thailand, has been born at Chiang Mai Zoo amid delights of the zoo officials and visitors. Zoo officials have to spray water at the cage of the baby hyrax constantly in an attempt to cool it from the current hot weather. The parents of the hyrax stand guard in front of the earthen hole, where it lives all the time, to prevent any danger that might occur to their sixth baby. Nipon Wichairat, assistant director of Chiang Mai Zoo, said the zoo received the parents from Africa and from the information received the hyraxes at the zoo are probably the only family in the kingdom. Hyraxes are mammalian animals and look very resemble to rats and rabbits but in fact they are originated from elephants as they do not use the incisors at the front of the jaw for slicing off leaves and grass, but use the molar teeth at the side of the jaw, instead. Nipon said zoo officials are planning to build a new home for the hyraxes so that visitors could easily appreciate their cuteness. (TNA)
