Bahrain attends meeting of Support Group for Morocco's Territorial Integrity

Geneva, Apr.28 (BNA): Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva and other international organizations and current Chair of GCC States Ambassadors Council, Ambassador Dr. Yusuf Abdulkarim Bucheeri, took part in the meeting of the Support Group for Morocco's Territorial Integrity, with the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet. The meeting was held virtually to affirm GCC countries' support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the brotherly Kingdom of Morocco. During the meeting, the Ambassador delivered a statement on behalf of the GCC countries, in which he affirmed the member states' support for the statements made by the Support Group for Morocco’s territorial integrity. He affirmed the group's support for the efforts made by the Kingdom of Morocco and its human rights institutions to promote and protect human rights throughout the region. He welcomed Morocco's constructive and constant commitments to the UN human rights mechanisms, especially the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council. He renewed the position of the GCC states in support of the sovereignty and safety of Morocco and all measures taken in this regard, including the recent ones aimed at ensuring freedom of civil and commercial movement at the Guerguerat border crossing, stressing that no provocation aimed at undermining freedom of movement in this vital area can be tolerated. Dr. Bucheeri also welcomed the establishment of consulates general by several countries in Dakhla and Laayoune, noting that it is an important step to revive investment and promote economic development that benefits the local population and the region as a whole. To conclude, he stressed that the GCC countries believe that the issue of the Sahara, which is a political dispute handled by the Security Council, can be resolved in the interest of the region in accordance with the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco, which was approved by the Security Council as credible and serious in order to reach a final political solution.
