Bahrain elected Basel Convention's Implementation Committee member

Manama, May 12 (BNA): Bahrain’s Supreme Council for Environment (SCE) has won the membership of the Implementation and Compliance Committee of the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal (the Basel Convention) for the 2019-2022 session. Commenting on the achievement, the Chief Executive Officer of the SCE, Dr. Mohamed Mubarak bin Daina, expressed pride in the kingdom’s membership of the Basel Convention’s committee, stressing the keenness of the SCE, led by HH Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa, HM the King’s Personal Representative, to implement the directives of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to participate effectively in the international agencies and organisations to enhance Bahrain’s status at the international levels, as well as highlight the distinguished capabilities of Bahraini competencies in attaining achievements. The exploit adds to the SCE’s previous successes attained thanks to its President, HH Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad, Dr. Bin Daina said, citing the SCE’s winning of the post of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA)’s Deputy Executive Director, as Representative of the Asia-Pacific Group. Acting Director of the Waste Management Department, Eng. Mohammed Aman, will represent the SCE at the Basel Convention’s Implementation and Compliance Committee. Comprising 10 members from the five continents, the Basel Convention’s Implementation and Compliance Committee assists parties to comply with their obligations under the Basel Convention and to facilitate, promote, monitor and aim to secure the implementation of and compliance with the obligations under it (the Convention).
