Bahrain participates in COP24 in Poland

Katowice, Dec. 12 (BNA): On behalf of the HM the King’s Personal Representative and President of the Supreme Council for the Environment (SCE), HH Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa, a Bahraini delegation, led by the Deputy President of SCE, HH Shaikh Faisal bin Rashid Al Khalifa, participated in the opening of the 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP 24), here in Poland from December 3 to 14. The kingdom’s participation in the important international event is in line with its keenness to be informed about the global efforts to address climate change and protect the Earth. It is also an opportunity to highlight its long experience in protecting the environment, as part of its efforts to honour its pledges in the environment-related agreements and covenants it has ratified.  The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was established in May 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, and came into force in March 1994 with the promise of strengthening global public awareness of climate change issues.  Among its main objectives is the stabilisation of concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere to prevent risks in the climate system.  The annual meetings of the Conference of the Parties (COP), which is the supreme body of the Convention and the association of all the countries that form part of it, are attended by environmental experts, ministers, heads of state and non-governmental organisations.
