Bahrain participates UN General Debate on Disarmament and International Security

New York, Oct.7 (BNA): The Kingdom of Bahrain has underlined the importance of cybersecurity to ensure that the gains of countries and peoples are not targeted, in light of the huge developments in communication and information technologies and digital transformation.
In his statement at the general debate of the Committee on Disarmament and International Security of the United Nations General Assembly, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations in New York HE Ambassador Jamal Faris Al-Rowaie said the world is still witnessing many serious security challenges in light of the continued presence of weapons of mass destruction, especially nuclear weapons.
In this context, he emphasized the importance of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons as a cornerstone of international efforts to promote nuclear disarmament, prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
He reiterated that outer space is a common global property that should be used for Peaceful purposes, away from conflicts and arms races.
HE Jamal Faris Al-Ruwaie stressed the Kingdom of Bahrain’s support for disarmament efforts targeting weapons of mass destruction, especially nuclear weapons and their means of delivery, and strengthening cooperation with the international community and the competent authorities to limit the spread of such weapons.
He emphasized the right of member states to make optimal peaceful use of advanced sciences in nuclear energy and stressed the necessity for Iran’s full commitment to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency, to ensure the preservation of regional and international security and stability.
Ambassador Al-Rowaie referred to the position of the Kingdom of Bahrain calling for freeing the Middle East region of weapons of mass destruction, especially nuclear weapons, in implementation of the decision of the 1995 NPT Review Conference.
He welcomed the results of the first session of the conference on negotiating the text of a binding treaty with the aim of establishing a zone free of nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction under the chairmanship of Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan due in November 2019.
The Permanent Representative wished the State of Kuwait success to in chairing the second session of the conference in November 2021, expressing hope that the work of the Tenth Conference to Review the Non-Proliferation Treaty to be held next year will be meet success through collective efforts to overcome differences and focus on common points.
