Bangkok’s dog shelter to be upgraded
BANGKOK, March 23 (TNA) – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will upgrade the shelter for stray dogs in Prawet district while considering building four more at four corners of the city.
Deputy BMA governor, Thaweesak Lertpraphan and the BMA’s senior officials on Friday visited the Prawet dog shelter to observe management of stray dogs, captured on complaints by the public.
Any dog, suspected of having infected with rabies will be quarantined.
All of the animals in captivity at this center have been vaccinated and sterilized. About 12 million baht is spent on food of these animals each year.
Mr Thaweesak said that the BMA’s plan to the Prawet dog shelter with the budget of about 200 million baht is expected to start this year. When it is completed with the next two years, it will have comprehensive veterinary clinic and will be ready to provide animal sterilization and first aid treatment for both pet and stray dogs.
The facilities here can accommodate 1,000 dogs and 200 cats. The BMA has another shelter to take care of these animals until they die naturally in Uthai Thani, which can accommodate 8,000 dogs.
The BMA is also considering the establishment of similar shelters at four corners of the city to control canine population and provide veterinary service for the public. (TNA)
