Bangkok to join "60+Earth Hour 2018" on March 24

BANGKOK, March 7 (TNA) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) invites offices and households in the capital to join other Thai provinces and other 187 countries worldwide to switch off the power for at least one hour for the "60+Earth Hour 2018" activity on March 24, aimed to conserve the energy and to help ease the problem of climate change or global warming. Bangkok Deputy Governor Chakkaphan Phiewngarm publicly made the invitation on Wednesday, announcing that BMA will simultaneously organize the "60+Earth Hour 2018" activity with other provinces and 187 countries worldwide on March 24 during 8:30-9:30pm (local time). The Bangkok deputy governor also invited the general public to support the "60+Earth Hour 2018" activity, symbolized with the word "WIFI", by highlighting its with "#connect2earth" in their social media networks. The Bangkok deputy governor told journalists that the City Authority has also set other landmarks in the capital for the one-hour blackout, including the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the Grand Palace, the Temple of the Dawn, the Giant Swing, the Rama VIII Bridge and the Golden Mountain of the Saket Temple, as well as all government agencies and state enterprises. According to the Bangkok deputy governor, the "60+Earth Hour 2018" activity is targeted to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide in the capital by up to 10,000 tons The deputy governor said the annual activity has conserved electricity consumption in Bangkok alone by 16,371 megawatts over the past decade, totally worth about 57.19 million baht, with last year's activity alone helping save electricity consumption in the capital by 1,953 megawatts or equivalent to the reduced emission of carbon dioxide by 1,016 tons, totally worth 7.68 million baht.
