Business Education Must Be Relevant in New Environment

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 4 (Bernama) -- Business education has to prepare leaders who would be able to understand the developments in the environment which have implications on the economy and financial system, said former Bank Negara (Central Bank of Malaysia) governor, Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz. This is because the environment had become complex and unpredictable and it was important to understand the risks to prepare for the future, she said. “There are important issues that need to be recognised as the world has become interconnected and we need to see how we can be interfaced,” Zeti said in her closing remarks at the Nikkei Asian Review Forum on “Importance of Business Education” here Thursday. She emphasised that that it was also important to understand the causes and be able to identify opportunities in a disruptive world. “Changes can happen suddenly with devastating effects or it could provide opportunities,” she explained. “Some of these challenges include digitalisation and cybersecurity and they have become important issues,” she said. Bank Negara Malaysia, she said, had a track record in investing in people and education. The central bank was instrumental in developing human talent and empowering women who were capable based on merit, she said. She pointed that when she left her position as the central bank governor, about 38 per cent of the senior management positions comprised high-powered women. – BERNAMA
