Call For Malaysian Government To Emulate Japan In Dealing With Ageing Population

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 12 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian government should emulate Japan in creating more jobs for the soon-to-be ageing population, said Asian Forum on Parliamentarians on Population and Development (AFPPD) Malaysia president Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah. "We can look at Japan. There, the ageing population still can work and get jobs, so we must look at creating suitable jobs for an ageing population," he told Bernama after attending a dinner hosted by AFPPD for Asian parliamentarians here Tuesday night. Ahmad Husni, who is also former Second Finance Minister, said other issues that needed to be given attention were efforts to provide affordable healthcare and the importance of having good welfare homes to cater for the current and future ageing population. "These are some of the issues shared between parliamentarians from various Asian countries," he added. Thirty parliamentarians and experts from 13 Asian countries, including China, Japan, Indonesia and Singapore, are attending the forum organised in collaboration with the Asian Population and Development Association Japan, United Nations Population Fund and International Planned Parenthood Federation. --BERNAMA
