Civil group opposes setting up Rohingya refugee camp in Thai South
BANGKOK, August 4 (TNA) - Members of a local civic group have voiced their opposition to a proposed idea of setting up a Rohingya refugee camp in Thailand's southern resort Ranong Province.
Sucheep Patthong, chairman of the local civic group named "People’s Network of Ranong", said on Saturday that his group would do its utmost to block the setting up of such a Rohingya refugee camp in Ranong.
Sucheep was responding to reports that some locals plan to provide financial support for the setting up of a refugee camp for Rohingya boat people from neighbouring Myanmar.
Sucheep reasoned that allowing stateless Rohingyas to stay in Thailand would, probably, lead to endless negative consequences, as evidenced in the past, and that Ranong, opposite the Myanmar territory, has already had social, economic and environmental problems stemming from a huge number of migrant workers.
