Commission on investigation of emergency at storehouse
Astana, November 11, 2009 (Khabar) - Commission on investigation of emergency at storehouse of “Tranzit-Service” began its work. The General Prosecutor’s office of Kazakhstan has begun a criminal case on this fact. Special state commission under the chairmanship of Minister for Emergencies Vladimir Bozhko will define the exact cause of fire and reason of people’s death and settle issues of material support to the bereaved families. Fire occurred on the territory of the vegetable store that is under construction. The state commission includes representatives of the Ministry for Emergencies, health, labor and social security and law enforcement agencies. They promise to voice the first results of the investigation in the near future. This issue has been discussed at the government meeting and Karim Masimov visited the accident site on the eve.
Karim Massimov, Prime Minister of Kazakhstan:
- It is necessary, together with the governors and Bozhko to work out on this and find out their originated regions and provide the necessary support to these families.
It is said 14 workers were killed, including 4 Russian citizens. They were engaged in refrigeration equipment at the construction site. Kazakhstan also provides the necessary assistance to their families. The preliminary cause of death is poisoning with carbon monoxide from burning insulation panels.
Vladimir Bozhko, Minister for Emergency Situations of Kazakhstan:
- According to preliminary conclusions, they died because of suffocation. Burning foam, burning chemical ingredients, which are part of the insulating panels caused their death. The fire was extinguished very quickly but very poisonous gases led to the tragic results.
The facility was almost completely destroyed by fire on the area of 8 thousand square meters. The fire was assigned the third category of complexity. 24 vehicles and 120 employees of the capital’s department for emergency situations extinguished the fire. The Ministry notes many victims could have been avoided if the call about fire was received in time. Vladimir Bozhko says not personnel called to firefighters but outside people. The General Prosecutor's Office has begun a criminal case on this tragedy.
