DPM: Israel is confident in Thailand's security measures

BANGKOK, March 16 (TNA) - Deputy Prime Minister General Yuthasak Sasiprapa said on Friday that Israel appears to be confident in Thailand's anti-terrorist capability and has expressed appreciation to Thai police's performances. General Yuthasak told reporters that he met the chair of the Israeli National Security Council and the Israeli ambassador to Thailand in Bangkok on Thursday, during which situations concerning Israel in many countries were discussed and the Israeli authorities appreciated swift responses of Thai police to incidents concerning Israel and urged Thai authorities to maintain strict security measures to prevent any party from using Thailand as a base for anti-Israel movements. General Yuthasak insisted that there has not been any additional terrorist movement in Thailand so far, following three bomb blasts on Sukhumvit 71 Road in Bangkok on February 14, and that the Thai authorities have contacted Malaysia and Iran to seek cooperation on suspects involved in the spate of bombing in the Thai capital. General Yuthasak also confirmed that security arrangements to protect the Israeli Embassy and Israeli diplomats in Thailand have carried on normally, but backup forces are ready to be deployed to ensure their safety. The deputy premier acknowledged that security measures will be intensified in Thailand next month, when there will be a royal cremation of Her Royal Highness Princess Bejaratana, followed by long traditional Thai New Year, or Songkran, holidays, beginning from April 8, with anticipated more international visitors to Thailand. Meanwhile, Wanchai Rujanawong, a deputy attorney general for foreign litigation, said that Malaysia has asked for additional evidence to back Thailand’s request for the extradition of a terrorist suspect, Masoud Sedaghatzadeh, who is alleged to have involved in the three bomb blasts in Bangkok last month. The Iranian man was arrested and has been detained in Malaysia. Wanchai noted that Thailand needs to convince the Malaysian court that the Iranian man is a real suspect in the bomb explosion case to seek his extradition, and that Thai prosecutors have coordinated the extradition request closely with their Malaysian counterparts.
