Experts discuss Kazakhstan’s presidency in OSCE

Astana, October 28, 2009 (Khabar) - Military, political, economics and humanities experts from the USA and Kazakhstan as well as representatives of various international and non-governmental organizations discussed possible challenges and opportunities during Kazakhstan’s presidency in the OSCE in 2010.

Talgat Kaliyev, foreign policy chairman, Ministry for Foreign Affairs of RK:
- Our task is to restore the OSCE role as a negotiations floor and for the use of the existing mechanisms that the OSCE has in order to prevent any inter-ethnic and inter-religious clashes.

Stephan Minikes, US Ambassador to OSCE 2001-2005:
- We all want Kazakhstan to succeed during its presidency in the OSCE. I have no doubts that Kazakhstan’s president will be successful. I am sure Kazakhstan has a bright future. Your country has gained independence and Kazakhstan’s presidency in the OSCE is another great opportunity for your republic to continue growing.

Relations between Russia and Georgia, the Nagorno Karabakh situation and problems in Moldova were all topics of discussion at the Astana conference and foreign attendees expressed their opinions about the issues which can be positively resolved by Kazakhstan. Participants in the forum also touched upon the Afghanistan issue as Kazakhstan will have to deal with this problem during its OSCE Presidency.
