Fulham sign Iranian winger Ashkan Dejagah
TEHRAN,Sept.2(MNA)--Iran midfielder Ashkan Dejagah quit Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg and joined Premier League team Fulham for an undisclosed fee on a three-year contract with an additional year’s option.
“We can not hold Ashkan Dejagah back, but we have met his wish to move to England,” said Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath.
The deal was done late on Friday night, shortly before the transfer window closed. Dejagah becomes Fulham's sixth signing of the transfer window after Dimitar Berbatov also agreed to join the West London club earlier on deadline day.
At Fulham, Dejagah, 26, is expected to replace U.S. star Clint Dempsey, who joined Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth 7.5 million euros (US$9.4m).
His impressive performances for the Bundesliga side last season -- where he registered many assists for his team -- earned him a first international call-up, where he has so far scored two goals in three matches for Iran.
Dejagah, who played for Germany at all age ranges from Under-17 up to Under-21, but made his debut for Iran earlier this year, has played 158 German league games for Hertha Berlin and Wolfsburg, scoring 19 goals.
Dejagah played twice against Fulham during the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League campaign, coming on as substitute in both legs of the Quarter-Final tie.
Dejagah said: “I’m very happy to be signing for Fulham and to come and play in the Premier League. I know Sascha [Riether] well and he told me very good things about the Club and, after I had spoken to the Manager and heard about the project here, I was convinced. So I am happy to be here and will give my best for the Club and our fans.”
