Heavy rain affects Thai-Cambodian border trade

CHANTHABURI, THAILAND, September 19 (TNA) - Floods, caused by continuous heavy rains, have lowered trade between Cambodia and Chanthaburi province of Thailand. Vice Chairman of the Thai-Cambodian Border Trade Operators and Tourism, Sombat Jungtrakul told reporters Wednesday that the flooding situation in many provinces of Thailand and the continuous heavy rainfalls in the country are affecting the Thai-Cambodian border trade in Chanthaburi. An inspection has found that Cambodians living across the border are lowering their demands for goods from the Thai side, from an average of 100 billion baht per day to a little over 50 billion baht per day, about a 50 percent decline in demands. Moreover, the inspection has also found that Cambodians crossing the border to buy goods in Thailand have decreased by half, except those of Cambodian workers, which have continued to come and work in Thailand with an average of 1,000 workers per day. The Vice Chairman, however, predicted if the weather situation returned to normal, the border trading in the province should also become lively again. (TNA)
