The president of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev has announced that as the defence ministry has received a number of flat blocks for their use. On the 13th of November, when the president was answering questions about reforming the army, he, as the Supreme Commander, announced that he is working on tackling the problems of the armed forces. Nursultan Nazarbayev noted that currently, Kazakhstan is witnessing the creation of a relatively small but well equipped army. Measures to increase the quality of battle training are also currently being undertaken. In the near future it is planned both to modernize the old equipment and buy new. The president also noted that the government is to solve staffing issues of the armed forces and improve the benefits of employment.
Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of Kazakhstan:
- As the Supreme Commander, I am personally working on this question. Recently I asked the defence ministry and the government to tackle these issues. In our army, the salary is bigger than all the countries of the CIS and I believe that we should keep this priority.
The defence minister reported that the housing stock of Kazakhstan’s military personnel is 16,973 flats, with the majority of the military community being far from residential areas. By the end of this year, the defence ministry is planning to construct 54 buildings and it has already commissioned a 184-flat block in Astana as well as 12-flat blocks in Arys, Badan and Zhibek-Zholy. The main event for military personnel though is in Astana.
Abdimalik Bazarkulov, accommodation department chief, Kazakhstan Armed Forces:
- In compliance with the president’s request, Astana has witnessed the construction of 129 blocks for 176 flats. Currently, we are witnessing the commissioning of these units and on the 16th of December, 176 families will receive flats.
The defence ministry noted that next year, the issue of providing military personnel with flats will be one of the most crucial ones.
