Identity verification process for migrant workers to be finished this month

BANGKOK, March 5 (TNA) - Employment Department Director-General Anurak Tossarat is confident that the identity verification process for migrant workers will be completed by the end of this month. Equipped with 26 iris scanners, borrowed from the Marine Department, he said the identity verification process in 22 provinces was not delayed. Since October last year, out of more than 190,000 migrant workers, over 93,000 persons have been verified by optical scanning. The process will be completed for the rest 60,000 people by the end of this month. He said as most workers or about 50,000 people stay in Samut Sakhon province, additional 10 scanners will be mobilized to Samut Sakhon where there are two scanners at the moment to expedite the identification verification process. Each machine can scan iris of about 500 people daily. He also explained that the department did not buy more scanners earlier because the procurement must be considered by the committee for identity verification of migrant workers, set up by the National Council for Peace and Order. The department often reports its operation to the committee in the past. (TNA)
