India court sentences 38 to death in 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts case

NEW DELHI, Feb 18 (Bernama) -- A court in the Indian state of Gujarat on Friday sentenced 38 men to death in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial bomb blasts case. The court had convicted 49 people on Feb 8 over the attacks that killed 56 people in various public places. Eleven of the convicts were given life imprisonment by special court judge A.R. Patel, according to a report citing special public prosecutor Amit Patel. Twenty-eight of the accused were acquitted after the long trial, which concluded in September 2021. Police had said the "Indian Mujahideen" group was behind the blasts, allegedly planned as a revenge for the 2002 Gujarat riots in which an estimated 2,000 people were killed. -- BERNAMA
