Indonesia Urges OIC To Help Resolve Syria Issue

JAKARTA, Feb 21 (Bernama) -- Indonesia has urged the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) to enhance its role in resolving various global issues, including Syria's issue. Indonesian Foreign minister Marty Natalegawa said President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had conveyed the appeal during his meeting with OIC secretary-general Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu and the members of the Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission of the OIC (IPHRC) here Monday. Marty was speaking to reporters after the meeting at the President's Palace here. Not long ago, Marty had sent a letter to Kazakhstan foreign minister and OIC chairman Yerzhan Kazykhanov to urge the body to hold a special conference on Syria. "Surely, OIC has the true potential to voice its views and become part of the solution," said Marty. IPHRC is holding its first official meeting in Jakarta starting Monday, until Feb 24. -- BERNAMA
