Interior minister warns of possible runoffs and landslides

NAN, July 30 (TNA) - Interior Minister Anupong Paojinda visited the northern province of Nan, following up assistance for landslide victims in Bo Kluea district. There he met the governors of northern provinces to discuss measures to cope with possible runoffs and landslides. In response to the recent landslide that killed eight people in Bo Kluea district, Gen Anupong said that regarding persistent rain, authorities would have to be prepared for possible natural disasters, quick warnings swift evacuation to save people’s lives. Efficiency could prevent the fatality that had happened in Nan, he said. He also said that disaster prevention should be intensified in provinces along the Mekong River, northern provinces and seaside provinces facing rough seas and big waves. Regarding assistance for Lao people affected by the dam collapse, Gen Anupong said the Interior Ministry was encouraging people in provinces to donate nonperishable goods because the transport of donations would take times.
