Iranian embroiderer Mahtab Noruzi dies at 78

TEHRAN,July 15(MNA) -- Mahtab Noruzi, the most famous Iranian Baluchi embroiderer, died Friday evening at the age of 78. She lived in the village of Qasemabad near the city of Bampur, Sistan-Baluchestan Province, Persian news agencies reported on Saturday. Nothing was mentioned about the cause of her death. Noruzi’s richly embroidered patterns made her works find ways into the homes of the wealthy. One of her works is currently on display at the Tehran’s Sadabad Palace Museum. She learned the art from her mom at the age of 15 and was practicing it since then. The artist was never married and made a living through her works while she was able. She also used to teach embroidery skills to the girls and women of her village. Throughout the years, she worried that she would not have enough time and energy to pass on her knowledge to the youth. Embroidery works coming from Afghanistan and Pakistan at lower prices and quality threaten the art in Sistan-Baluchestan Province.
