Kazakhstan’s military pilots open winter training period

Astana, November 12, 2009 (Khabar) - The pilots fly in very bad weather in winter in Central Asia region. The height of the flight does not exceed one hundreds of meters. That is what the pilots mean when they talk about work in adverse weather conditions. Safety move people and goods from point "A" to point "B" thus depends not only on devices, but on the intuition of the crew. And it is necessary to train constantly.

Alisher Ibragimov, major, commander of helicopter wing:
- Currently, the weather of Almaty is very foggy and we are conducting these flights in order to prepare our pilots for flying and landing in these weather conditions.

The landing is the most difficult element of training. The rotary wing of the helicopter produces a lot of snow dust, which limits visibility. It is especially difficult for Mi-26 helicopters, which are 42 metres at length and weigh almost 50 tonnes. The Mi-26 helicopter has been used by Kazakhstan’s air defence forces for 10 months. The problem lies in the fact that in Kazakhstan nobody has used such helicopters for over 5 years, since they were being modernised.

Talgat Tazhikbayev, commander of Mi-26 squadron:
- The biggest problems for pilots, is the size of the helicopter. For example, the Mi-17 helicopter is smaller. Pilots have to deal with the land perception distortions. The aerodynamics of both helicopters are the same and I believe that experienced pilots will be able to retrain easily.

The Mi-26 helicopter can be used in fire-fighting operations and for delivering heavy constructions to the mountains. In particular, it can pick up 10 tonnes at 6.5 metres height. It is not a problem to transport emergency personnel with equipment to any part of Kazakhstan.
