Kazakhstan is "mini UN”

Astana, May 13, 2009 (Khabar) - Conference on inter-ethnic relations has been held in the capital of Kazakhstan. Representatives of 130 ethnic groups have been living in peace and accord in the country. The participants of the on-going research and practice conference entitled “The Assembly of Nations of Kazakhstan as an institution of consolidation of civil society” have came to the conclusion that the practices of Kazakhstan concerning the establishment of international accord have been adopted by the countries which care about the peaceful future of the planet. Kazakhstan managed to escape the destructive interethnic conflict during the 90s which was a difficult time for all post-Soviet countries. This can be attributed to the wide and well thought-out policy of the country’s leader, head of state Nursultan Nazarbayev, noted the attendees. Kazakhstan has developed a unique system of inter-ethnic relations. Representatives of 130 ethnic groups have been living in peace and conciliation in Kazakh land for 18 years so far.

Bakhytzhan Abdraimov, rector, Gumilyov National Eurasian University:
- Now, we can look back and ask ourselves about the causes of successful phenomenon of Kazakhstan concerning the stability in inter-ethnic relations. What lies in the phenomenon of tolerant relations among ethnic groups and what is called as Nazarbayev’s “secret” today? These questions are being answered not only by certain experts but also scientific research institutions and funds which work on the nature of this phenomenon.

The Assembly of nations of Kazakhstan, which is also being referred to as “UN in miniature” by experts, have played a great role in uniting people residing in the republic and making them cohesive. The consolidation of society has allowed for conducting a good number of reforms, forming a political system which corresponds to current time fundamentals and boosting civil initiative throughout the years of independence. Today, Kazakhstan is known as a secular state, adherent to ideals of peace, tolerance and constructive dialogue due to the friendship of nations to a large extent, noted guests and conference participants.

Hayati Tufekcioglu, rector, Eurasian Institute at University of Istanbul:
- The fact that people of various nationalities live in peace here is a good example. I believe that the model of the “Assembly of nations of Kazakhstan” should be taken into consideration not only by our country but other states of the world. One has to congratulate the president Nazarbayev on this accomplishment.

Experts also stated that with today’s new challenges, generations have to be inoculated against xenophobia and non-acceptance of foreign religions or people of other nationalities. However, they also added that Kazakhstan doesn’t need this vaccine.
