Kazakhstan-Russia-EU: prospects of strategic partnership
Astana, October 22, 2009 (Khabar) - At a Kazakhstan-Russia-EU: prospects of strategic partnership conference, both local and foreign economists and political scientists were talking about the cooperation of Kazakhstan, Russia and the European Union, problems of visa support, and prospects of Customs Union development.
For the past 10 months of 2009 the turnover between Kazakhstan and the EU has accounted for 29 billion dollars and between Kazakhstan and Russia, 20 billion US dollars. As part of the programof EU and Central Asian cooperation, which was adopted in 2007, it was noted that Kazakhstan is a strategic partner of Europe in economic, energy recourses, healthcare, educational and scientific areas.
Peter Linke, head of branch of Roza Luxemburg fund in RF (FRG):
- The vote of Kazakhstan is very important because Kazakhstan has the best image among Central Asian states. Kazakhstan has a lot of considerations about the future of bilateral and trilateral relations.
Vladimir Yevseyev, senior officer of International Security Centre, International Economics and International Relations Institute, Russia:
- Kazakhstan is a link between East and West and since the major part of its territory is situated in Europe, it be widely regarded as a European state, just like Turkey. From this perspective, Kazakhstan can be the transit in transportation of freights and energy carriers.
The government of Kazakhstan is currently examining the “Renewed priorities for Kazakhstan and Central Asian states” project by the European Union.
Zhanat Zakiyeva, adviser to RK Foreign Affairs Ministry:
- For example, currently, the EU is using relax visa requirements on the territory of Kazakhstan but in its turn, Kazakhstan is facing a number of problems. Kazakhstan and some Central Asian states were able to achieve visa facilitation with some countries of the Central Europe but only at the bilateral level. But of course we are in need of efforts on the European level.
Participants of the conference believe that Kazakhstan, Russia and the European Union should develop common approaches in such areas as defense, energy and transit.
