Kenen Azerbayev’s 125th anniversary celebration

Zhambyl region, October 03, 2009, Khabar – Kenen Azerbayev was referred to as the general of songs and poems by participants of a research-to-practice conference. The 125th anniversary of the great Kazakh poet, composer and singer has been celebrated in the Korday district of the Zhambyl region. The Kenen Azerbayev museum which preserves footages of his performances, documents, personal possessions and household articles works there.
Mukhtar Kul-Mukhammed, Kazakh minister of culture and information:
Gabit Musrepov highly appraised him by saying that Kenen was a successor of an ancient tradition called sal-seri and that he was the last sal-seri representative. Gabit Musrepov himself was the successor of sal-seri and he admired Kenen and looked up to him. So, Kenen retained the sal-seri tradition at the highest possible level.
According to art experts, Kenen Azerbayev wrote about 150 poems which were set to music. Such songs as “Boztorgay”, “Koksholak”, “Bazar, Nazar” and other works which he composed at the age of 11 are still considered to be “smash hits” among people.
Apart from that, Azerbayev kept in his memory and performed plenty of pieces of Kazakh folklore and epic poems of other nations. He continued the best traditions of outstanding Kazakh folk poets and singers in his works. A great number of his compositions were translated into the Russian language.

Altynbek Korazbayev, singer and composer, people’s artiste of Kazakhstan:
I believe that Kenen Azerbayev was the successor of Birzhan-sal, Akhan-seri, and Baluan Sholak. His folklore works are still cherished by us and our generation keeps singing his songs and promoting them. His songs will always remain in our hearts and I believe that Kenen Azerbayev and his works will be remembered for a long time.

Sultan Rayev, Kyrgyz minister of culture and information:
In my opinion, Kenen Azerbayev is one of the greatest folk poets and singers not only in Kazakhstan but in Kyrgyzstan too. He had very close relations with outstanding Kyrgyz folk poets and singers as they used to hold meetings and competitions. So, they were spiritual friends. Therefore, the today’s anniversary celebration of Kenen-ata is a grand occasion for both the Kazakh and Kyrgyz nations.

After the official part, the celebration continued outside the village resulting in more than 40 yurts being built on a hill. Local pop singers and bands performed Kenen Azerbayev’s best songs. The event also featured a horseracing competition involving more that 100 stallions from various regions of both Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
