Krabi beefs up maritime safety

KRABI, Feb 22 (TNA) -- Authorities in the Thai southern province of Krabi have been deploying more buoys to better manage the anchoring of boats in the area to prevent accidents. Head of the Nopparat Thara Beach and Phi Phi Islands National Park of Krabi province, Sarayut Tanthien led a team of the park's authorities on a boat to deploy nine buoys in the sea at Maya Bay in Ao Nang subdistrict of Krabi provincial seat. He said the buoys would help commercials boats, which bring visitors to the Nopparat Thara Beach and Phi Phi Islands National Park for a tour, to orderly anchor in the area, so as to beef up safety and prevent accidents in the area, as two speed boats had previously collided in January, injuring tourists. Mr Sarayut said each buoy could anchor up to 4 boats and would help keep the anchoring order. More than 100 boats have been arriving at Maya Bay during the long weekend, bringing tourists for a scuba diving sessions to enjoy the deep sea beauty, prompting the tourism atmosphere to be extremely active.
