Large number of drink-drivers during Songkran: NCPO

BANGKOK, April 14 (TNA) -- Despite warnings given by law enforcement agencies that severe punishment would be imposed against those found drinking alcoholic beverages and driving during Songkran festival, Thailand’s traditional New Year, a large number of drunk drivers were arrested and vehicles seized during the past five days, said a deputy spokeswoman of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO). NCPO has taken control of state administration on May 22, 2014 following the prolonged political deadlock, long-running protests, and violence. The deputy spokeswoman of NCPO said a total of 64,310 persons were found guilty between April 9 – 13. Authorities have temporarily seized 1,565 vehicles, comprising 1,182 motorcycles and 383 cars, she said. Legal actions have been taken against 19,577 motorcyclists and 10,593 motorists, she said. As several major provinces are holding Songkran celebrations or water-splashing festival, the NCPO is concerned over the health of the celebrants due to the heat, diseases, theft and road accidents, she said. Another NCPO spokesman said the country was quite peaceful presently due to the good cooperation given by the public but the number of road accidents and casualties were still quite high. The spokesman said concerned authorities would continue to monitor closely on the security situation in Thailand during the festival. (TNA)
