A magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit the eastern Turkey

ANKARA - Murat Muratoglu - Turkey's Disaster & Emergency Management announced early on Monday the death toll following massive earthquake that hit the eastern province of Van as 138.
A management statement said that the earthquake killed 138 people and wounded 350 others. "970 buildings were demolished in the earthquake," the statement said. The statement said 44 provinces and 37 institutions had sent search and rescue operations as well as health teams and equipment to the disaster zone.
Moreover, Interior Minister Idris Naim Sahin said 117 people died in Van's Ercis town and 100 others lost their lives in downtown Van. Turkey's premier says 138 people died in downtown Van Turkey's prime minister said early on Monday that 138 people died in the massive earthquake that hit the eastern province of Van.  Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan said 93 people died in downtown Van and 45 others lost their lives in Ercis town. "350 people were injured in downtown Van," Erdogan told reporters in the quake-hit province. Erdogan said efforts were under way to shift rubble in downtown Van and Ercis, and noted that 55 buildings demolished in Ercis. The prime minister called on citizens not to enter their seriously damaged houses, adding that many countries called to express condolences. "I would like to thank heads of state and government of these countries (the United States, Germany, Azerbaijan). Azerbaijan has sent a plane with a crowded relief team," he said. Erdogan also said Bulgaria, China, Denmark, Armenia, Georgia, Britain, Iran, Switzerland, Israel, Japan, Canada, South Korea, Hungary, Pakistan, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Greece, European Union, United Nations and NATO had talked to Turkish Foreign Ministry to contribute to relief efforts. Prime Minister Erdogan later followed search and rescue efforts in downtown Van and visited injured people at the state hospital.
