Malaysia To Host Sixth GSUT Conference In December - International Media

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 15 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will be the first country in the Asian region to host the Global Summit on Urban Tourism (GSUT), the sixth edition of which will be held here from Dec 4 to 6. Deputy Minister of Tourism and Culture Ermieyati Samsudin said the agreement for the conference between Malaysia and the Secretary-General of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Dr. Taleb Rifai was signed in Chengdu, China on Thursday in conjunction with the 22nd General Assembly of UNWTO from Sept 11 to 16. “This is the outcome of a bilateral meeting between UNWTO and the Minister of Tourism and Culture UNWTO Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz on Oct 17 last year in conjunction with the World Tourism Conference (WTC) 2016. “I believe the GSUT will promote Malaysia as a major global destination for Meetings, Incentives, Conventions & Exhibition (MICE),” she said in a statement Thursday. Mas Ermieyati said hosting the conference would also show Malaysia’s pro-active role and commitment in global tourism which was in line with the government’s efforts to attract more international tourists. The conference which involves UNWTO member countries would bear the theme ‘Sustainable & Competitive Tourism on the New Urban Agenda’, and an estimated 800 local and foreign participants are expected to attend it, she said. -- BERNAMA
