Malaysia-Thailand Border VEP Charge Only After Completion of Study

ALOR SETAR (Kedah, Malaysia), Aug 21 (Bernama) -- Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) charge for foreign-registered vehicles entering Malaysia via the Malaysia-Thailand border will only be implemented after the completion of the technical study conducted by the Transport Ministry. Road Transport Department (RTD) director-general Nadzri Siron said today the study on the installation of VEP in the states bordering the neighbouring country was still ongoing. “We will then be able to implement the VEP charge as that already being implemented in Johor Bahru (in Malaysia’s southern state Johor). However, for now, we have not decided on the time frame as the study is still in progress. “We (RTD) will also discuss with the state government to work on the appropriate time to implement VEP charge at Kedah’s border with Thailand,” he told reporters near here, Monday. Most likely, the amount of the VEP charge at Malaysia-Thailand border would be similar to the ones imposed in Johor Bahru, at US$4.66 (RM20) per entry for foreign registration vehicles, he said. “The collection of VEP charge in Johor Bharu was handed over to the state government, and as for the Malaysia-Thailand border area, we are still waiting for an announcement from the Transport Ministry,” Nadzri said. He added that US$2.12 million (RM9,106,900) had been collected following the implementation of the VEP charge at the Malaysia-Singapore entry point in Johor Bahru from November last year until July this year. --BERNAMA
