Mekong River reaches critical level in Mukdaharn

MUKDAHAN, Aug 1 (TNA) - The Mekong River has reached the critical level, overflowing into the Indo-China market in the northeastern province of Mukdahan. Traders are forced to move their goods from underground stalls before their belongings could be damaged. The provincial irrigation hydrology center measured the water level at 12.61 metres, which was over the crisis level. The river is likely to keep rising, receiving the northern runoff and the water released from Nam Ngum 5 Dam in Laos. Fish basket farmers keep an eye on the torrent of water, which could damage the baskets and affect the fish stock. Provincial governor Paitoon Rakprathet said rain stopped but the water level continues to rise by one centimetre per hour. The red flags were placed to warn local residents along the river. Local authorities are preparing evacuation of villagers in low-lying areas. (TNA)
