Minister receives top UN official

Manama, Mar. 13 (BNA): Electricity and Water Affairs Minister Dr. Abdulhussain Mirza received United Nations Resident Coordinator Amin Al-Sharqawi who congratulated him on Royal Decree 22/2019 setting up the Sustainable Energy Centre and assigning the minister to supervise it. Al-Sharqawi also congratulated the minister on the results achieved in the implementation of the National Renewable Energy Plan and the National Plan for Energy Efficiency. The minister said that the decree establishing the centre represents a major step that will put Bahrain on the map of countries that use renewable, clean and environmentally friendly energy. It will also support the achievement of the national goals set by the Council of Ministers under which five percent (5%) of energy use will be renewable by 2025. Al-Sharqawi said that the Royal Decree establishing the Sustainable Energy Center will be a real translation of the policies, initiatives and actions of the government's work programme and will achieve the seventh objective of sustainable development goals of ensuring universal and affordable access to modern, reliable and sustainable energy services by 2030. The objectives of the Center for Sustainable Energy would be at the heart of the Government's work programme, particularly in the area of environment and urban development, as well as in the theme of enhancing energy efficiency, improving efficiency and rationalizing consumption.
