MMEA Detains Filipino Fishermen For Fish Bombing In Malaysia's Sabah Pulau Lankayan Waters

SANDAKAN (Sabah, Malaysia), June 16 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has detained four fishermen from the Philippines for bombing fish in the waters of Pulau Lankayan, here, Wednesday. Sandakan Maritime District (DM17) deputy director of operations Commander Mohd Khairul Anuar Abd Majid said the pump boat with four fishermen, aged 15 to 47 years, was detained by a MMEA patrol boat at 5 pm 2.2 nautical miles north-east of Pulau Lankayan. He said an inspection of the boat found five bottles containing ammonia nitrate, an explosive material, with fuses and matches. Fifty kilogrammes of fish were also seized and were believed to have been caught using the explosives, he told a media conference here Thursday. Mohd Khairul Anuar said the detention of the fishermen was the result of co-operation from the Sugud Islands Marine Conservation Area (SIMCA) which reported the incident to MMEA. -- BERNAMA
