M'sia's Anti-Corruption Commission Chief Recognised By Igec

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 4 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner, Abu Kassim Mohamed received recognition from the Interpol Group of Experts on Corruption (IGEC) in France on Thursday for his contribution to combating corruption. He was among seven individuals who received medals and certificates from Interpol's secretary-general Ronald K.Noble at a ceremony after the final meeting of the IGEC concluded at its General Secretariat headquarters. Interpol in a statement today said the recipients included IGEC chairman Barry O'Keefe AM, a former Supreme Court judge of New South Wales, Australia and commissioner of the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) in New South Wales, and IGEC vice-chairman Michael Hershman, who is also president of the Fairfax Group and co-founder of Transparency International. The others are Sue Akers, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of the London Metropolitan Police, Kevin Ford, managing director and chief compliancy officer with Regulatory DataCorp, Dr Michel Girado, professor in criminology at Ottawa University, Canada, and Paul Lachal Roberts from the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF). The final meeting marked the completion of the group's mandate and the development of Interpol's anti-corruption activities, including initiatives to assist law enforcement bodies in recovering and returning stolen public funds to victim countries. Among the achievements of IGEC since its creation in 1999 were the production of the Global Standards to Combat Corruption in Police Forces/Services and the Library of Best Practices, comprehensive documents which have been accepted worldwide as essential texts for corruption investigators. Noble said Interpol and each of its 190 members owed the IGEC members a debt of gratitude for their outstanding and dedicated service. -- BERNAMA
