Mudflow of 1973: lessons and conclusions

Almaty, 25 July (Khabar) - One of most tragic events of 1970-s was recollected in Almaty. In July 1973, 5 million cubic meters of mudflowstruck Almaty as a result of melting of glaciers. Catastrophe was avoided due to timely erected dam and unbelievable efforts. Two generations met and discussed issues of mudflow danger with taking into account lessons of past. Summer of 1973 was very hot. On July 15, mudflow from Tuyuk-Su glacier moved to the city.

Leonid Girsh, participant of liquidation of consequences of mudflow in 1973:- That picture was terrible. It was Sunday, people with children had a rest in “Gorelniki” tourist base. Holiday homes №1 and №2 of Ministers’ Council, “Balkhash” sanatorium, pioneer camps “Berezka” and “Orlyonok” worked in basin of river Small Almatinka. People set up tents along the Small Almatinka river.

The dam that was erected together with Medeo skating rink started but stood the flow of 120 million horse-powers. But lake was founded at the foot of Medeo. Water level was quickly rising and 5 million cubic meters could burst through dam and go to the city at any moment. About 15 000 workers managed to save Almaty from catastrophe during 6 days.

Alexey Khegai, participant of liquidation of consequences of mudflow in 1973: - Can you imagine that there were 4 million cubic meters of water inalignment and city would be hit with 12 million cubic meters. According to the specialists it means that eastern part of city, streets Dostyk, Kunayev, the best part of city would suffer. Now about 300 000 people live there. The damage would be several billion dollars not speaking about human lives.

The conference “Mudflow of 1973: lessons and conclusions” the formerrescuers spoke how to resist disaster. Workers of emergency service say today informing scheme works well. And city authorities hold preventing actions and take measures on strengthening of protecting constructions.
